It Truly Bothers Me That Obakki Is Essentially Owned By Nickelback

I would consider Obakki founder Trena Peake (wife of Nickelsack guitarist Ryan Peake) to be less than one degree away from the band.  Really she is part of the essence of Nickelback, one of North America’s most loved Surrey rock themed bands, purveyors of safely ordinary and utterly generic rock sounds that somehow remain popular despite many years of creating the same howling, bro loved songs.

I despise Nickelback as a musical group, so it came as a great horror to finally confirm that Obakki is owned by the wife of one of the band.  That’s right.  If you’re buying Obakki you’re supporting a Nickelback wife project.

It’s tough because there are many pieces I’ve loved from Obakki over the years, and I continue to enjoy their collections as the brand continues to develop its identity.  Alternatively, check out Genevieve Graham‘s collections; she was Obakki’s first designer and created the whole draping, monochromatic look.

Genevieve has some really fantastic pieces!!!! Love this amazing sculptural neck piece/scarf I purchased from her a year ago. She was one of the best for Obakki!

I remember her on Project Runway. She didn’t seem very nice.

@Wendy: I know from inside info that show was designed to bring out the worst character traits in everyone. Imagine if you were sewing with a deadline in 30 degree room! The production was full of mind games.

That is a shame. Why they feel the need to create drama for the viewers I do not know. Cause really I feel like most fashion fans just want to see them make cool designs and could really care less if they get bitchy to one another.

@Wendy: I think that’s true as well, but producers have gone what I call the ‘Fox TV route’; cheap digs in place of meaningful, [more] intelligent programming.

Actually, if you buy Obakki, the only thing you’re “supporting” is the Obakki Foundation, not Nickelback. 100% of proceeds go towards development projects in Canada and Africa, supporting orphans and clean water. Not sure how you can really spin that into a negative…

02.06.11 @ 4:34 pm

@Shannon: Actually, that’s not true. Only pieces designed for the Obakki Foundation go towards that cause; the other profits are funneled towards the business (it wouldn’t be able to continue to run otherwise).

02.06.11 @ 10:26 pm

I wasn’t clear enough – I’m saying that Obakki in no way supports the band (they’re doing well enough on their own). Because 100% of Foundation profits go to the projects they support, if you buy Obakki, then the Obakki profits help to alleviate the administrative costs of the Foundation. It’s not a direct thing, but it’s more direct than Obakki having anything to do with Nickelback.

hi,
i have to thank you victoria. treana has done everything in her power to wipe my part in the creation of obakki clean from the slate (i had to pick my jaw up off the ground when i heard a rumour she called herself the designer). i was the co-founder along with treana, i designed 7 collections and gave the line it’s initial look and feel, even though it has moved in a very different direction. i’ve never actually seen anyone mention my time at obakki in years, it’s nice to see a little recognition for the extremely hard work that myself and dave (men’s designer) did for obakki.
cheers!

I love genevieves designs, and she has been very nice to talk too, and ive never heard anyone who has met her in person say otherwise. you shouldnt believe what you see on tv…

great post potter. glad you had the gumption to say it like it is on this one. mad loves for gen! xoxo

So if Obakki funds Nickelback, would you also say that Trevor Linden’s wife Cristina Giusti’s line Basquiat funds the Canucks?

What a stupid conclusion to draw. The connection to Nickelback is unfortunate and less than appealing — their lyrics are base, bland and misogynistic, but really, come on, this is a ridiculous and meaningless connection.

Boring!

02.16.11 @ 12:39 pm

@Anon: stupid though it may be, it’s a fact! You may find it boring, but I don’t.

02.16.11 @ 3:01 pm

fuck you, you fucking moron

02.19.11 @ 6:15 pm

@fuck you: thank you for sharing your kind words!

02.20.11 @ 1:27 am

Somehow helping kids in Africa is a bad thing in your eyes. Well again I say to you, KDON & GENVIEVE…. FUCK YOU YOU TALENTLESS NO NOTHING HACKS

02.20.11 @ 2:33 pm

@Fuckyou: Alright, usually I ignore witless pricks like yourself, but today I will provide a rebuttle. Let’s clear something here: nobody hates or wants to prevent helping impoverished people anywhere, Africa least of all. Clearly the Obakki Foundation is doing a good thing, but so do all foundations that assist the needy.

This post provided insight into what I considered an interesting topic, nothing more, nothing less. Nobody is out to ‘get’ Obakki, stop their efforts with the Foundation or anything of the sort; this is a discussion on my viewpoint of the subject, being this is my blog.

If you dislike the viewpoint being portrayed, do not come back. I, and the others who enjoy this site for the conjecture that I provide do not want you here. If you feel you are being wronged, I invite you to send me an email that identifies your name and your issues plainly and reasonably, to which I will respond.

If you do not care to maturely communicate your concerns, kindly go off and leave this corner of the internet be.

i think my favorite is the part where i get thrown under the bus again – as a no nothing hack. hahah – reminds me of the project runway dais. ahhhhhhh, the good ole times :P

02.20.11 @ 3:37 pm

hahaah this is great! A++ for Potter

02.20.11 @ 8:31 pm

I want to meet Genevieve – she sounds awesome. Preferably, not under a bus…

I love how heated people got over this blog post. It’s a blog. You have to be extremely self-obsessive, to be personally offended by a blog post that doesn’t directly say “HAY DAN, I BONED YOUR WIFE. HERE ARE PICS”. It’s an interesting link between pop icons and vancouver based fashion. Do I listen to them? No. Am I still going to go into Obakki because they have some nice mens line pieces/some of the girls working their are really cute? Yes.

02.21.11 @ 2:56 pm

@DW: that’s pretty much it! Also: I find it funny people get so aggro when I never said the designs were bad; in fact I outwardly stated I enjoyed the pieces! Pahhh

02.21.11 @ 9:58 pm

……… I find this all very amusing. I’ll bet you labored over your witty retort Potter. Why even bother. You did write a rather uninformed scathing post. If you dish it out be prepared to have it thrown back in your face. Obakki has never hidden the fact that Treana is married to the guy from Nickelback. A simple cursory google search pulls up several articles on Trena’s personal life. So much hate directed at a band that has done nothing wrong to you?? How about doing a post on the obakki foundation. How about posting some actual news??? your blog is nothing more than a slew of posted Internet sales. Seriously lame,

sincerely

Freddy

02.22.11 @ 8:11 am

@Freddy: I find it very amusing as well! And yes, much intense labor over my incredibly witty retort.

02.22.11 @ 11:47 am

Genevieves collections at obakki almost killed the brand due to very creative but very unprofitable designs. Stupidly expensive fabrics and designs were all sold out dirt cheap after the designer left. Also, Im confused why you hate Nickelback so much? Did they kill your parents or are you just riding the wave of conformities? If I recall correctly, Stella McCartney also started from a band’s profit and doesn’t associate with Paul McCartney in any way. Sounds to me like you don’t understand how a business works.
