When you’re styling loving, it’s incredibly difficult to pack for travel (especially extended adventures) to look good, have a multitude of mix’n match outfits and still keep your suitcase underweight. You want to get along easily wherever you are, but you don’t want to walk around like a foreign tool – check it out:
Dresses are the easiest way to dress for the day while on vacay; it’s a top and bottom, and one thing you have to decide on. Bring a few pieces of simple cut, with summery patterns and a loose, A-line cut for walking comfort and ease. Check out Forever 21′s print mesh dress ($15), AllSaints’ parachute ($250) or checked Dellal dresses ($350).
When it comes to eyewear, I can’t stress avoidance of the Wayfarer enough – they are tired, overdone and the choice of most lemming hipsters. Give yourself a bit of flare and choose a round frame like Topshop Unique’s Flash design ($36), which happen to have clear frame options perfect for summer wear.
Ahh, shorts… the most often bungled vacation style. SS10′s summer shorts are cargo military inspired, and a loose[er] fit – spy American Eagle’s bermuda ($40) or Topshop’s zip pocket linen pair ($60). If you’re going to go for a standard denim or cotton short, do yourself a favor and cover your rear and extreme upper thigh, since nothing says foreign trash like skin leaking out of clothing.
Shoes are easier than you may assume – grab a pair of flat leather shoes or boots, place some gel insoles inside and you’re good to go. I personally own Jeffrey Campbell’s All-C combat boots ($220), and can vouch they are the most comfortable walking boots I’ve ever owned. Brogues such as Dune’s design ($77) are also perfect options as they are soft, yet allow you avoid the trap of sneakers.
Bags are the easiest interchangeable piece to bring, since as long as your bag is hands free, has zipper compartments and can hold a bottle of water and small snack. Messenger bags are preferable, MZ Wallace’s Paige bag ($295) being an excellent example of what you should be looking for.
Last of all is the easiest trap to fall into; don’t over complicate your tops when packing! Choose loose, yet proper fitting printed tees and tanks in no more than a count of 6. No matter what you tell yourself, you’re going to find things to buy, so leave yourself the room! Choose unique designs that portray your personal style; demiCouture favorites are AllSaints’ Pearl ($55) and Christopher Kane’s Doll t-shirt ($251).
Make sure all your pieces are light, quirky (yet tasteful) and will set you apart from the rest of the tourist crowd, then you’re good to go!

Those boots are stunning, and will definitely make their way into my wardrobe. I’ve been obsessively trying to find the perfect pair of Doc Martens, but they’re both (a) incredibly uncomfortable during break-in, and (b) difficult to decide re: most desirable number of eyes. Brogues are also gorgeous.

05.11.10 @ 8:18 pmIt sounds terrible but I think i’ll still be rocking my wayfarers because they were $5, too much of a bargain to not enjoy…. it’s ok, i’m going home to England soon…
06.03.10 @ 9:19 pm@Chez: I’ll never diss $5 sunglasses.. I got a pair of mad scientist rounds in Mexico last December and wear them everywhere. You go- whether they’re wayfarers or not!
