Why The Bay Should Be Carrying Jason Matlo

Thanks to Bonnie Brooks and her endless radio airtime we’re all painfully aware of The Bay’s current style renaissance.  If The Bay is going to be successful, they’re going to have to invest in Canadian talent.  This includes Vancouver designer Jason Matlo, who has the skills and design experience to expand his line to the big box chain.

Not only would HBC garner immense PR for their laudable efforts to support homegrown design talent, but this would also effectively save many designers from being decimated by the lack of government support to the arts.  Bonnie Brooks and The Bay have the ability to veritably power the Canadian design economy and acquire scores of loyal patrons during so.

I know that Jason Matlo’s collection would fare beautifully amongst the likes of fellow Canadian label Pink Tartan. If HBC can place their brand beside the heinous likes of Ed Hardy, there is no conceivable reason why designers like Matlo should be left out of this potential shared success.

It’s clear that HBC means business with their brand overhaul, so let’s see some tangible proof they’re willing to support Canada’s local design talent.

Unfortunately the Bay seems to be going the backwards. They’ve recently ejected the Canadian By Design section in the womenswear floor at the downtown Vancouver store, which does just that: showcase local talent. Jason Matlo would have fit in with the rest of the labels featured in that department.

Jason Matlo’s designs are breathtaking AND local. I personally do not need any other reasons to extend my support, 100%
