During the summer months, Holt Renfrew held a correspondent contest to highlight the new Contemporary web environment and report on current trends, attend HR parties and provide blog content for a year.
For Vancouver, Karolina Jez was selected. The unfortunate truth is that Karolina lacks adequate linguistic and grammatical skills to properly report on events and trends for a corporate website. She does not utilize any creativity when reporting on trends and designers and does not inspire a reader to investigate these products at Holt Renfrew in person.
This was personified within a recent post regarding animal print trending; all five examples given displayed the same animal print in the same color. This displayed a complete disregard the industry’s current interpretation of the trend (Lanvin’s neon leopard, Alice + Olivia’s zebra blazer, etc) to which she would have complete access to at Vancouver’s 135,000 square foot Holt Renfrew location.
Anyone who spends even a minimal amount of time exploring HR’s mecca knows that there is an unbelievable selection at your fingertips. Karolina’s creative stunt and poor grammar are an insult to a Holt Renfrew’s potential and existing customers, and truly puts the chain in a negative light.
I sincerely hope that Holt Renfrew tightens their reins when it comes to quality control on the Contemporary Correspondent blog, as this current display of lackluster styling and reporting failure certainly does not reflect positively upon the company.

If you’re going to be a style correspondent, your writing should display more, and better, style than that article of hers. Honestly. As I said on Twitter, it wasn’t a mixed metaphor, it was a bloody metaphor smoothie.
10.14.09 @ 5:00 pmReally? The poor girl only got $1000 in GC to use at the store. It is blog writing not Conde Naste. Who really cares? But, I do agree that she may not have been the best choice.
10.14.09 @ 5:27 pmYou are terrible! How do you think the correspondent will feel if she found out this is what certain people think of her and her style?
10.14.09 @ 6:01 pm@Who cares: when you’re representing a brand you are seen as that brand, so yeah, it matters.
@Paula: When you put your work up for public view, expect criticism. I hope she does read this and start to take some pride in what she publishes.
10.14.09 @ 6:13 pmI would also like to see some coverage of the menswear scene at Holt Renfrew too. Would it kill the correspondent to discuss some of the new brands or styles carried on the bottom floor of the store?
10.14.09 @ 8:01 pmIn Karolina’s defense, I think the deal is that she is supposed to feature the stuff in the cheaper AKA ‘contemporary’ section so 3rd floor back where Marc, LAMB, Phillip Lim, Malandrino etc are. That leaves Lanvin out but still… uninspired. I was one of the semi-finalists for the HR Contemporary Correspondent Search and, I must say, I was disappointed when when they picked Karolina (Shallom was a choice I could stand behind). I’ve seen Karolina’s work in Vancouver View and it’s pretty laughable (as is the magazine). Karolina won the final round via Facebook vote so I guess she was chosen by Holt Renfrew clients. But in the end, it’s just a blog and it is our choice whether to read it or not.
10.14.09 @ 11:40 pmI used to work at HR and it is all politics there. They now have a beautiful blonde thin approachable girl who the world can look up to or at least the daughters of those who spend mega bucks there. ie/ The Rogers Family. I have worked at many of the special nights where you spend a grand and get a $100 GC along with a cheap glass of wine and the big spenders go nuts. Canada is a conservative country. It’s all image for Holts.
NOTE: I am not white thin and blonde. I thought this is important to note.
10.15.09 @ 10:37 am@Who cares: Agreed about the visual politics. Karolina’s competition, Shallom Johnson, is a black girl with a mowhawk. She was unbelievably qualified for the role; too bad the competition was a glorified popularity contest.
10.15.09 @ 10:47 amSo pretty much you are calling HR racist? Is this a joke. You are the reason the Vancouver fashion scene is laughable… everybody thinks it so it might as well be said… do us all a favor and close this blog.
10.15.09 @ 1:07 pm@sore losers? No, I am suggesting that Holt Renfrew is conservative, not racist. The fact they chose a human Barbie over a girl that isn’t the standard idea of mainstream style perfectly outlines this.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I am not a sore loser since I opted not to enter this contest. The only thing close to a joke are your grammar skills.
Next time, try signing your full name and leave a URL so I can see who is insulting me. If you want to hide behind a mask of anonymity, take your pansy self somewhere else and stop reading this blog that you apparently hate so much.
10.15.09 @ 2:11 pmNot a sore loser (it’s been too long) but maybe I am a bit judgmental because of her association with Vancouver View (another story for another time). Most of Karolina’s entries on FB were very good and showed a lot of talent. She did win fair and square over Shallom through FB vote. I guess the fans were quite conservative and the HR blog is conservative too so I guess it’s a perfect match. But who knows, maybe it will evolve into something more exciting? I’ll keep reading.
10.15.09 @ 4:40 pmLife is a popularity contest, why do you think you have this blog? Popularity matters, looks matter and your blog actually matters. I may rag on you from time to time but you do actually keep up-to- date with some useful news items. So in the spirit of not ragging on people, keep up the blogging, apologies for the blunt rudeness in the past and enjoy the weekend
10.16.09 @ 11:03 am@Ted: Thank you for that, I appreciate it. I acknowledge that when I spit acid I should expect to receive it back in equal amount, but I always welcome discussion.
If you see something you disagree with, I want you to continue to challenge me. It keeps life interesting!

10.16.09 @ 11:19 amHahah I like the acid comment, but I admit I should be far more constructive in my comments and far less rude, this after all your blog and I aim to respect that from now on in a more constructive manner
peace
