If you’ve ever wanted to make a difference by using clothing and textiles as a launching point and are located in [or near] Vancouver, this is the way to do it.

The group Our Social Fabric is a non-profit organization that works to create a socially responsible and viable textile collection, recycling and re-manufacturing in Vancouver’s east side. While doing so, they provide employment opportunities to the residents of the area, as well as a chance at social reintegration.

Our Social Fabric collects textile waste (from movie sets to private citizens) which are sorted and graded, and stores these items for processing and/or re-sale. OSF aims to process raw fibers into spools which are in turn woven into new fabric pieces which will create sustainable usage of fully and locally recycled products.

The point is not only to create new products from old, but to provide social assistance in the form of employment, socializing, networking and stability for those most needing of it in Vancouver’s downtown east side – a tall boast, but with your help they can do it.

By at risk individuals having stable employment, this directly reduces crime, homelessness and increases a former addict’s chances of successful recovery.

If you can’t donate your time, please donate funds or items to be auctioned.

Kim Cathers of Project Runway Canada is very involved with this project, so please contact her if you have anything to assist them with achieving their goal.

I think it’s a wonderful idea for so many reasons, employing people otherwise unable to find jobs, helping to feed and clothe their families, giving individuals an opportunity to do something constructive, saving the landfills from useful materials, re-using perfectly good materials and clothing, encouraging creativity and initiative and on and on……….fanatastic idea!!!!!
