Glamour Features A Model With A Ponch. Great.

I know this is a little late (this was in their May issue), but come on Glamour.

I realize we need to give ‘real’ beauty a chance, but why don’t we start with not airbrushing models within an inch of their facial lines first?

Glamour did a great thing by featuring women of varying sizes in their swimsuit features, but for god’s sake, let’s get fit women of varying sizes within magazines!

Why didn’t this lady have a dress on; something to flatter her shape and show others to work with the bodies they have? I find this photo to be a pointless gesture.

I for one am not ready for ponches on pages.

Why is it that whenever someone is larger then a size 0 in a magazine such a big deal? Why can’t they just feature these normal sized models as models?? They don’t even have to say anything- no catchy tag lines, just start showing real women and NOT make a huge deal of it.

“let’s get fit women of varying sizes within magazines!”

I am a very fit athletic girl.. and when I sit down without clothes on, that’s what I look like.

I have a ponch on my body, so I have no issue seeing one on a page.

i think that fashion photographs, no matter the premises the photographer follows, have a main aim. and that aim is to exhibit beauty. and this photo is ridiculously ugly.

@Michael: I have to agree; this has nothing to do with being fashionable or stylish – this photo should have been published in Shape Magazine.

Well, you have to admit, she is SHAPES…eh…eh???

not saying where i stand on the argument, this is simply an awful photo.
the highlight of this photo is her stomach.
being a photographer, you could have shot this woman so many other ways to show off her beauty rather then focus on, whether you agree or not, at least artistically, a flaw.

why do people always expect magizines to dress models in something that “flatters your shape”? why not love the shape you are?

@aboston: because magazines set a standard for appearance and idealize what many people desire, or nobody would buy them.

Wow. I am so shocked by the shallowness of your comment….”Why didn’t this lady have a dress on; something to flatter her shape and show others to work with the bodies they have?”

This IS her body… what is wrong with it? Artists have long adored painting & drawing the female form & it’s sumptuous beauty, and I think it’s simply wonderful to see real, live, naked bodies in magazines.

I have been slim all my life, despite having 2 (might I mention – girls.) Now being in my mid 30′s & watching women struggle with self concepts for so long, and coming to a time with my girls that I begin hearing the same from them, reading comments such as yours frustrates me to no end.

I used to be a stylist in London, and had a friend who was told after doing a walk for an Yves Saint Laurent show, that she could get the job if she lost 7lbs. She was 5″11 & 115lbs, & turned the job down on principle. I’ve also seen countless models with glaring eating disorders continually being hired for shows & editorial work… it boggles my mind.

Please, please think. Fashion is at its root creative. Truly creative people do not live in boxes. I applaud Glamour for stepping out of theirs.

@Sacha: Not one person here is stating she ought to by rail thin. What I am saying is this is an incredibly poor photograph to have been published in a magazine. If we ignore the woman’s body, it is still an incredibly awful photo that is inappropriate to be in a fashion orientated magazine.

It’s her body and she’s a beautiful woman! It’s a relaxed pose that isn’t trying to disguise her natural body and in fact emphasizes it. It’s saying there is nothing to hide, and beauty can include a stomach pooch like this. That’s a positive message for the vast majority of women who aren’t models.

It looks like she might have had a baby. So many women are moms and don’t look exactly like a 19 year old any more. In fact, the vast majority. So why not? It’s not like Glamour is actually a fashion-oriented magazine, anyway. It’s a lifestyle-oriented magazine, isn’t it? It’s not Vogue or another supposedly high-fashion publication, so a focus on the body is not irrelevant. I should note that a lot of fashion publications have featured Beth Ditto’s body as well. It’s good to see something in between Beth Ditto and someone who is 5″11 and 95 lbs.

Anyway, I love it. I have a flat stomach, but I have other “flaws”. So I can relate.

This is art. This is a beautiful photo. Sorry she’s not rail thin like you are with a little boy body. I think it’s fantastic for magazines to start showing different body types. Not hiding the flaws.

Also, you can’t really win an argument with a sarcastic title like that. Shame on you. Unfortunately the world is not made up of women that look exactly like you. Thankfully there are progressive people in the fashion industry.

@Penelope: No, it isn’t a beautiful photo. It wouldn’t have been a great piece of art even with a model without rolls, honestly. The composition, angle and model are all beastly.

Oh, and I’ll be sarcastic and negative all I want, thanks. If you want to preach about your values, get a venue for yourself.
