FW09 Loves: Sam Edelman Basket Woven Boots

Few black boots inspire me as much as this basket woven design by Sam Edelman; they are the ideal fall boot.  The weave design gives the boot then ability to be worn with contrasting pieces without creating a look that is overwhelming.

Best of all, they’re on sale (at the moment) at Bluefly for $145!

The Fluevog ‘Melrose’ Has Been Reincarnated Into An Ankle Boot

These have not been released yet, but this photo was released today in Fluevog‘s ‘coming soon’ section.

You’re likely already familiar with the full size Melrose ($479 CA). I like this design far better as an ankle boot, though I almost wish the boot shaft was a little lower.

This is one piece of news that won’t be lumped into the ‘fashion crimes’ category; the Washington Post is reporting that this hideous plastic clog company are on their last legs.

I suppose this is one of the only benefits of this hideous recession, though this is excellent news for a summer Friday, no?

Topshop’s FW09 Lookbook Preview Brings Out The Attitude
Thursday July 16th 2009, 10:27 am

This is Topshop‘s preview morsel we’ve been given – a punkish twist on glam grunge.

Many of the current trends are set to live on through FW09; lace and sheer fabrics, sequins and shredded clothing appears to rule the autumn high street racks. I must say I’m looking forward to seeing (and wearing) all this leopard print come fall.

I wonder if the local fashionistas will try their own spin? It won’t come easy to pull of without camp, but only time will tell.

Are there any particular adventurous trends you’re going to attempt this coming season, or even now?

Tara Jean Makes Style.com’s Look Of The Day

My, my – look who made the Style.com (aka Vogue’s online playground) Look Of The Day feature – the lovely and sweet Tara Jean.  I got to hang with Tara and Shallom a couple weeks back before she jetted off to Paris, and to Chanel’s FW09 couture runway.

Though she is a Nebraska native, she did spend her last chunk of time in North America in Vancouver.  It’s nice to see a [semi]local girl do well overseas.

Perhaps I’m looking too much into this – but does Prada‘s FW09 lookbook space trajectory doodle look suspiciously like GaGa’s cosmic head piece?

The conspiracy nut in me says yes.

What’s With The Upsurge Of Sheer?
Tuesday July 14th 2009, 12:20 pm

It’s everywhere – sheer is the black of SS09, and It’s not only being seen on women; it’s on men as well. This particular trend is disastrous for a number of reasons.

A few points to keep in mind:

It didn’t work for goth club kids in the 90s. If a freaky nightclub spawn can’t get away with a sheer shirt, then how can you negotiate a look that will work for you in the oh so critical daylight? It can’t be done for the average man or lady.

Even if you’re toned like a model, it’s unflattering. If this guy looks silly wearing a sheer top, then how is it that you won’t? Take my word for it, it’s a losing battle.

Layering makes for silly looks more often than not. Since sheer is translucent, it won’t matter what you wear underneath that top. Layering a tank top under a sheer top is tacky looking and very juvenile. The only way to manifest a decent layer look would be to wear a t-shirt under an oversized sheer t-shirt of the same cut.

It may look like lingerie. Let’s fact facts, sheers and mesh are typically home to the world of underclothes.

***

If you want to jump into the trend, there are ways to do things without achieving visual self sabotage. Try having sheer as an accent to an outfit, not the main event. Take the below images for example; try a dress with sheer ($130; French Connection), utilize mesh leggings ($11; Forever 21) or a mesh oversized t-shirt ($29; American Apparel) to complete a look.

Details On Vancouver’s Epic Summer Clothing Sale!
Monday July 13th 2009, 12:06 pm

OK! My lovely friend Terri (of The Conveyor Belt), Shallom (Stylefinds) and Kim (kimcathers.com – yes, Project Runway Canada’s infamous Kim) are presenting a truly epic clothing sale on July 25th.

The sale will be comprised of our clothes, plus pieces from our friends and perhaps you! We will be accepting clothing from anyone who wishes to have it sold at the Grace Gallery (Main + 3rd) on the day of the sale. Naturally, the earlier you drop off the clothing, the more eyes will see it. We take off 25% of the selling price as our fee, and you will collect the rest of the money and any unsold garments at the end of the day.

Shoot me a message if you’re interested in having your pieces sold!

I’ll be highlighting my personal stash of epic threads every so often on demiCouture ’till the 25th, so you know some of the awesomeness to expect. All prices are extremely reasonable, clothing is in immaculate condition and will be an extreme steal.

This sale won’t be featuring only vintage (though there is a lot of that – handpicked pieces from across the land by myself) – genuine name brand items are being sold as well.

Brand highlights: Coach bags, Michael Kors bags, Selfridges dresses (from the UK), Habitual (denim), Diesel (denim and clothing), Marc Jacobs (denim), J Brand (denim), Earnest Sewn (denim), Lux (denim), D&G (belt), Alice + Olivia for Payless (boots), plus loads more.

Vintage highlights: Proper fitting leather jackets varying in design/colors, blazers, unisex brogues, unisex boots, sweaters, cardigans, sequin dresses, sequin shirts, t-shirts and a [nearly literal] tonne more.

The sale will start at 11AM on Saturday July 25th, 2009. The windows will be covered, but we will be inside and open for business!

The shot below was of one wall of the previous sale – this time is going to be bigger and better (and we’ll have rolling racks this time!)

Givenchy Brings Us ‘The’ Boots Of FW09
Thursday July 09th 2009, 2:57 pm

Holy bleep, guys.  These Givenchy thigh high nappa leather boots are amazingly intense.

Can you imagine layering these with, well, you entire fall wardrobe? They would look amazing with practically anything; skinnies, leggings, skirts, tights… even leather leggings!

The wedge is a nice update to the a-typical heel design and it also provides increased balance stability and comfort.  For added sleekness, the bottom of the foot is designed to look as if it is a pump with lace up spats covering the leg; perfect!

The only downer (of course) is the price point – they clock in at over $2,000 per pair.

DVF Wishes Brüno Had Crashed Her Runway

I can’t wait to watch the terror Sacha Cohen’s Brüno reigns upon the fashion world, and apparently design great Diane von Furstenberg wishes she had been one of his victims.

She has been quoted as stating “he’s a great comedian and incredibly talented and I can’t wait to see it. In comedy, anything is fair game…He didn’t come to my fashion show but I wish he had.”

Awesome, DVF…  your sense of humor has made your designs even more fantastic.
