While I admittedly never watched the first season of Project Runway Canada, I have been tuning in for this season like clockwork (I blame Kim). Though only three episodes have been aired, it has become painfully obvious that the show is setting up every single designer for public failure in favor of ratings.
Our favorite forehead banded low self esteemer Christie Clayton was the most recent victim of the show. Don’t be mistaken; I am not a particular fan of Christie’s creations on or off the show, but she is the best example of how the show’s tactics took a person who was deemed capable enough to be in this competition and appear to reduce them to a level of a novice.
Despite what Project Runway Canada preaches, they aren’t out to find Canada’s most talented designer – they’re out to find a designer who will take stress, abuse and confusion and create the best outfit out of a group that is not using their full skill. To me, that isn’t a proper showcase of design.
I’m going to assume that none of these designers are doing their best work (and understandably so), but wouldn’t an audience rather see some amazing pieces by Canadian talent, rather than a few cheap “ohmygawd” moments resulting in glued together garment embarrassments?
Tsk, tsk reality TV.

I couldn’t agree move. Its all about the drama of it and not about real talent and executon.
02.11.09 @ 10:53 amUnfortunately that’s what reality TV is ALL about and any contestant who is willing to participate should know that they have basically signed up to become a puppet, moving in a manner that the show producers deem right in order to bring in the ratings.
A designer shouldn’t be judged by their personality but rather the end result. Whether they portray the designers in good or bad light is not so much the issue. The designers are equally at fault for putting themselves out there the way they do.
02.11.09 @ 5:27 pmTsk tsk indeed. Our latest post on the F-list blog was of similar ire. Glad we’re not the only ones expecting to see more than a puddle of tears.
