How To Pull Off A Pillbox Hat

I found a funeral pillbox hat at Value Village recently (and for a measly 3 dollars may I add), and I can’t get enough of it.

I’ve been mixing mine in with a more contemporary look (such as a t-shirt and a leather jacket) for an updated look on the classic, versus stringing together a dull rendition of something Jackie O has already done to death and back again.

Personally, I prefer wearing the hat on the back of my head versus angled on the top, which is more of a laissez faire look.

Avoid mixing classic vintage cuts that may overpower the outfit and take away from the visual impact of the hat, and put together a look that will blast people with your abilities to mix and match pieces throughout the decades!

As for the photo, this is the best I have for now…my friend Ben took it at The Cheaper Show after party. I, of course, have heinous red-eye.

As If We Needed Another Reason To Adore Karl Lagerfeld

He’s fashion’s It-man, and now he’s extending a gloved hand and offering safety tips to the French by way of public safety adverts.

His line reads, “It’s yellow, it’s ugly, it doesn’t go with anything, but it could save your life”. Even when this man decides to go head first into an advertising campaign such as this one; somehow the man manages to not appear as a sell-out.

Now if only North America would be so receptive to ad campaigns like this one!

I suppose that the fact that most North Americans would rather see Football Player XYZ touting their favorite safety practices versus a prominent creative figure speaks volumes for our confused and drowning culture.

What a world.

Soldier on, Karl. Soldier on.

How To Wear A Motorcycle Jacket

Well, it’s finally hit me: I need to own a motorcycle jacket.

I will admit, there was a slight worry of a possibility that I may look like a bit of a butch, but I have found a few jackets online that will satisfy your edgier leather jacket needs.

Unfortunately, I’ve seen this done incorrectly far more times than not, so we’ll go over a few tips and tricks for improving your off duty chic look.

DO

  • Wear your jacket unzipped. Nothing screams ‘bad 80s fashion salvage’ than an uncomfortably cropped waistline.
  • Mix up your look. If you don’t want to scream tasteless trend whore, don’t just throw on a motorcycle jacket, skinny jeans and a scarf every bloody time. Try revving up your look by using the jacket as a topper to a funky dress, or baggier bottoms. If your top is fitted, you can [generally] get away with wearing something looser on the bottom half without risking house comparisons.
  • Layer. Don’t be a bore, add a cardigan or multiple shirts that peek from below the crop of your jacket.
  • Mix in color. Color (as seen below) is an easy way to lighten the look of the outfit and compliment the dark jacket. You obviously don’t have to go hipster-overboard all the time with the sunglasses and message word tee, but every now and again it can be a fun preference.
  • Invest in a quality vintage piece. Expect to pay anything from $120 and up for a quality piece of vintage leather, though like Wayfarers, this jacket will doubtfully go out of style for at least the next few decades.

DON’T

  • Wear a cropped motorcycle jacket zipped. You cut off your waistline at an unflattering point, and will make yourself look heavier.
  • Go overboard on the accessories. The jacket is a strong statement, don’t decrease its visual impact by adding sunglasses and a hat (etc).
  • Wear grossly misshapen shirts. As you can see below, her men’s plaid shirt just looks incredibly poorly thought out. Aside from being shapeless, it’s a lazy look that one must avoid.
  • Wear gigantic and/or un-tailored motorcycle jackets. You can avoid having to tailor your jacket if it’s super-tiny and cropped straight off the bat as the photo examples show, but having a huge jacket is going to make you look like some man eating she-devil from the 80s.

These of course are the major points to keep in brain, but of course always try to remember the cardinal rule of flattering your own body type.

Sex And The City, Supplying Bad Fashion To A Theater Near You

Ok, so a few of my friends are ultra hyped about this movie. Even as a lover of fashion and the idea of such a luxurious existence, I cannot and never have understood the appeal of this series.

Carrie’s ensembles are usually OK, but not amazing. I find most of her outfits, especially this one which is apparently from a scene in the movie. I like the style, but that is so age inappropriate and not at all flattering for a woman in her forties.

So the concept is that these woman are supposed to be mature, 40-something ladies, yet the Carrie character is seen in promo shots dressed in a cobalt blue dress with high boots and black fishnet stockings. I was not aware women of this age (nevermind supposed New York city dwellers) were bringing back hooker chic full-tilt.

I find that as the more conservatively styled character, Kristin Davis looks consistently the least offensive, though she admittedly takes nearly no fashion risk, so I am on neutral ground regarding her character. When it comes down to it, I suppose I understand the need for the characters to push the visual limit, though none of these creations seem to be a positive outcome of such efforts.

I’ll use an image below as a prime example of my distaste for the clothing in this movie. S.J.P. has brought back the original Carrie bouffant, complete with a candy striper blouse over a matching white waistcoat and trouser. This outfit looks like half was thieved from a traveling ringmaster; and the pink does her 40-something character no favors. Instead of making her look stylish, powerful and well put together, it screams that she’s trying too hard to look a decade younger.

As the oldest actress on set, you would think her stylists would give Kim Cattrall a bit more visual leeway as to not make the age difference stand out. Instead, they put her in a red blob that no woman of any age should wear. All those pleats age her incredibly, especially the cut of the outfit that shows so many folds and not enough of a proper fit, doing her body no favours.

Before anyone disagrees vehemently, I realize that not all their styling is like this, but this is one example of many I could have used. I dearly hope fans who have grown with this series over the past decade have style know-how enough to avoid these bodily blunders.
